This past week, Mark Levin went on and on about Sean Hannity’s Twitter addiction. He was being funny, but for the celebrities and personalities who claim to be for the People, Sean Hannity’s “addiction” may be worth picking up themselves!
How can you claim to be for the People without engaging them, on a personal level? Now, grant it, if you have 500k fans you can’t “engage” all of them at once. Nobody is suggesting that you do!
I remember when I first joined Twitter, back in early August of 2008, it’s how I got involved in #dontgo which led to #tcot (I was involved in that), it led to my involvement in Team Sarah, which was one of the main groups that helped to promote and organize Tea Parties. I would say that without engagement the Tea Party would never have happened!
When I joined Twitter, a guy named John Culberson (@johnculberson) gave me tips, followed be, and really helped me get started. He also happens to be a Congressman from Texas. So WHY did he bother with little old me?
I asked him and he told me: he takes time every week to talk to “ordinary people”, it helps in doing his job to represent ordinary people.
Since then, I’ve had lots of great, personal interactions with “celebrities”, some in person, some on the phone, some via Twitter. As I’ve done more, experienced more, and grown my own audience, along with my (evil) twin Paul Collier, it’s been easier to “access” celebrities: we can actually help them get their message out.
So recently I started a new Twitter account, my own. I did not talk about y resume’, my company, or my projects. I was just me being me. It felt like when I first got started.
One day I noticed Sean Hannity on Twitter. I saw him talking to real people, he actually followed someone I know, and I saw him encourage new Twitter users. He is engaged, and he is doing more to fire people up to motivate them than those who have millions of followers but who don’t engage anyone! Who knows if Hannity is going to inspire someone to help create the next version of the Tea Party?
Sean Hannity’s “addiction” is one of the best things that ever happened on Twitter!
